|
|
Hi all,
I'm considering taking my first contract in China at a university. I am satisfied with almost all terms of the contract. However, the stipulation for overtime pay is disturbing to me. The compensation rate seems almost unacceptably low at 60 RMB per contact hour.
Is this the standard rate? Please share what rate you were offered per hour for overtime duties. Thank you. |

It's important to find out if the overtime is mandatory or optional. Most likely it will be optional, I've yet to see a contract which stipulates there may be mandatory overtime for a university.
My last contract had 80 RMB/hour overtime. My FAO called me in one day and said they were going to put on extra classes and I'd be required to teach them. When I pointed out that I was already working the maximum stipulated in my contract they offered to pay the overtime amount, which I didn't think was worth it and declined. Nothing ever came of the extra classes. |

100/45 minute class is standard for overtime here. No-one ever works overtime though (optional), so it isn't a big deal.

100/45 minute class at my old school.
200/45 minute class at my new school.
I tend to avoid it where possible as it's a headache chasing down the pay - loads of departmental buck passing, and financial sleaziness - "Oh the class you working last May 18th no count the overtime as May 1st the holiday therefore the monthly average hours still same as previously." |

It varies from contract to contract, but I'd just ignore it if I were you. If they ask you to work overtime say you don't have time. If you want to work extra do it outside the university for 200-300 per hour.
60 per hour is pretty funny though. That's lower than what you earn per hour for contract hours, right? |

Sleaziness, passing the buck/blame/responsibility are all part of this corrupt nation. Of course, university work is quite light compared to the nasty language mills most of us work at. Just like others advised, turn down the OT and stick to privates. |

OP.
Is your contract a 'max 20 hours' type?
In which case the OT presumably kicks in at anything in excess of 20 - not anything in excess of what your current schedule entails say 16 or 18. |

Usually, FTs at public universities are required to work overtime ONLY if it couldn't hire enough FTs. My experience is that after six weeks of working with the freshmen, their classes are dropped. Administration is well-aware that even 18 hours is a burn-out. |

I agree with Bud.
I did 20 pw for half a semester as another teacher went home sick.
Never again. It was Oral E and although the classwork wasn't so bad, the final assessments and mark recording were a horror story. |
