Howdy!
I have a few questions for you pros as I'm deciding between two offers and figuring out the finer points of both contracts. One is in Shanghai, the other in Wuxi. It looks like positives and cons are making it a close run, with plenty of glitches in both of them. Any help and additional advice with these questions would be appreciated!
Does anyone have any experience with living or working in Wuxi?
If I was promised 'paid summer and winter holidays' during interview, is it fair to insistent on it being included in the contract (as it is not) on top of the official holidays?
Financially, is it a fair estimate that Shanghai is on average 15-20%more expensive than Wuxi (including cost of rent)?
That will be a good start to untangle towards a decision. Thank you! |

You should insist on the terms you agreed at interview being in the contract, otherwise there could be trouble later when the employer forgets the promise.
Shanghai is a big place: some parts will be double ( and more ) the cost of Wuxi , in terms of rent at least, some places maybe on a par. In Shanghai, downtown Puxi (around Jing'an Temple and the french concession) and the riverside Pudong are probably the most expensive areas. If you are in the suburbs , it will be pretty much like living in one of the neighbouring cities (Suzhou, Kunshan). |

I'm there now. Overall it's a decent city. What's the school? Uni/College? PM if you like.

Get it in writing. The general default answer in NE Asia when a question isn't understood is "Yes". The old bait and switch can be an issue too.

I never really got the whole Shanghai is more expensive than everywhere else thing. In all my visits there the prices in the markets and supermarkets seemed to be more or less on par with that which you'd pay elsewhere. The ways it does start to become pricier is if you can't resist the additional food and drink options which aren't available in other cities like microbrewed beer, or imported foie gras in the Shitty Shop. Cook at home, or eat in places catering towards locals and you generally will won't be hurting your budget too much more than anywhere else.
Rent is a different matter. In Shanghai that will sting a lot. Based on the rent I know friends are paying for fairly strategic locations in the Wu' I'd say Shanghai is going to set you back more like an additional 100%. |

Both times I visited Wuxi the pollution was horrendous. Far worse than Shanghai. This would be my main worry in living there. Toast's comments about prices seem reasonable, though I do believe restaurant prices in Shanghai are more, even at local places. Yet it's not a real issue if you shop around. |
