| Always going to get weirdos, that isn't the point for anyone wanting to jump in on this. The fact that there are no controls/measures for dealing with abusive students shows how bad places like Gaba can potentially be. |

I think that potential eikaiwa teachers should be made aware of the fact that only 50% of the adult students are really there to study English. The other 50% (whether sexually motivated or not) are there simply to have a conversation with you and get some attention.
Eikaiwa is a service industry first, education comes fairly low on their list of priorities.
I had female students (mostly bored housewives or unmarried middle aged women) asking many of the inappropriate questions in the article, a couple even asked to touch my biceps (none said the wanted to drink my milk though unfortunately). It didn't really bother me though, in fact I quite liked it. I can see how it could be scary for a woman though. |

I'm glad to say that's something I never had to put up with at Shane. I guess their higher prices and "we're professionals" image counts for something after all.
To me, this is more evidence (should it be needed) that you should work for GABA only if you're desperate -- e.g. as a stepping stone to get you into Japan. |

If this is indeed true, I hope Gaba goes down.
This is completely unprofessional behavior on the part of Gaba's managers--not really surprising though unfortunately.
For shame, Gaba, for shame.
Warm regards,

I bet it is true. Though most of the ESl jobs/companies here just gloss over sexual harassment. Just pretend it doesn't exist. I have heard stories of girls being groped by students. The teacher reporting the behavior, and basically nothing meaningful happened.
Honestly, women should think of Japan as a not violent middle eastern country. Where women are looked down on, and SH is swept under the carpet. |

Yup!
With Gaba I think it depends mostly on the Japanese manager in the individual branch. Administration is essentially divided into Japanese staff, who do the sales and deal with the students under a Japanese manager and a foreign manager who supervisors the instructors.
The Japanese manager at my branch was fantastic, and watched out for the instructors as much as the foreign manager did, but I know that wasn't the case everywhere. I did hear horror stories about what instructors were expected to put up with elsewhere, especially in the centers in the business districts.
There were a few weird/creepy/inappropriate/difficult students in my learning studio, though they were odd in a whole variety of different ways. I was forewarned whenever one booked me for the first time and if we were uncomfortable with a student we could have them blocked from our schedule without a fuss. I never bothered, but I know others did. But I have no doubt that some managers in other centers would be less supportive.
Having said that, I know of teachers in AEON and Berlitz who were being subjected to sexual harassment as well (sometimes from staff as well as students). It barely seems to register as an issue with many employers, and instead is treated as something women should just 'expect' in a Japanese workplace. |

| Greater exposure of this and other shady practices would help I think. It seems that nothing changes until someone is embarassed by the media here. |

| Seeing how it took international journalists to expose the sexual harassment deal in Tokyo's govt. I don't see this going anywhere, ever TBH. Just red flag the bad guys is the best we can do |

To get it into an English language newspaper is good cos it'll probably come up on a google search. I've got a video conference with Piers Morgan this afternoon though if you want me to put a pitch in |

I worked for shane and had a crazy in one of my group classes. after class one day, I ran into the crazy at an eatery and ate with them to be polite. sure enough, they told me their intentions to date me shortly after then later, after i said not interested, they said they would leave the school if I did not show personal interest in them. great way to start a relationship! I was thinking, please go away.
management contacts me as she started to not show up, as if there was another way to deal with it. to make matters worse, this persona owed the school money for past lessons, and the collecting of money is never the teachers responsibility. not my concern. so naturally, the manager did not relate well and seemed miffed that the revenue got away as he 'had to report it to his superiors and it reflected upon him.' which he told me!!!! doh! way to show your cards! it amounted to, I'm not listening to you, this crazy women should be in your class after trying to blackmail you or you should have made it work... I felt unsupported and quickly realized I was an object, there to retain revenue. also that bookkeeping was sketchy there.
shane was actually very open in training about dating students, saying its ok, that in life people meet in all sorts of places and they understand that. but be discrete and responsible. I was shocked and thought wow, that's progressive. they didn't say during training, you will be blackmailed for romance from someone who owes us money and don't lose the student... |
