I have heard someone say that Prime Minister Abe is considering allowing a considerable number of immigrants to live and work in Japan. This is mainly to fill vacant less desirable jobs like fast food and factory jobs. The other purposes are to increase sales of products and payment of taxes.

Do you think this policy will be implemented? How will the Japanese deal with the cultural differences of immigrants? Will Japanese culture be threatened? Will Japan turn into a multicultural country like The U.S.A. or Canada?

Do you see any other problems or opportunities?

I actually think the aging population is a good thing for Japan. This country could use a few million fewer people, couldn't it?

If you were suggesting we culled people when they got to a certain age I'd be all ears. Unfortunately that's the problem, too many people unable to work so they need to bring in people from poorer countries.

Last week there was a report on Japanese exploitation of Chinese immigrants being tricked into little more than slave labour. Call me cynical but this is what they might aim for with larger amounts of immigration. It'll be people from dirt poor countries who can be exploited then sent packing.

I dont think there is any desire whatsoever to make it a multicultural place, but there maybe a knock on effect from cheap/slave labour if they mass import that. Bit like Western countries then lol

I hope not. I like how safe Japan is, and mass immigration will make it so that huge areas are dangerous.

Seriously no thanks, and i hope that only a small trickle of immigrants comes to Japan. As was said, Japan doesn't need 120M people. This isn't the 50's/60's anymore. You don't have 30,000 people working at a single factory anymore.

I'd saw a better use of resources would be to get a lot of industry out of Kanto. As a large earthquake in Kanto would be devastating to the Japanese economy. They need to spread it around for safety.

I was reading an article (sorry can't remember the paper, English edition of something) about increasing "immigration". Abe was apparently quite specific that he is not talking about immigration like we melting-pot, nation-of-immigrants , 'mericans think of immigration. He's talking short term laborers for those "3K" jobs.
Work 'em. Send them home after 3 years. Rinse and repeat.
I saw on T.V, they were starting up that program where they import foreign-health care workers again. That was a bit of a bait-and-switch if I remember from last time.
Who was it, Pitarou?, who said, "Japan does not have an immigration policy, it has a foreigner management policy."

Have you seen Japan's demographic profile? It's insane. Sure, Japan could do with fewer people, but only if those people are old. But, since compulsory euthanasia for the over-70s is not an option, allowing young workers to enter is a good alternative.

Japan is going to need a lot more than 200,000 new workers to fill the gap. More like 1,000,000. And given how badly the government has bungled previous immigration programs I wouldn't be surprised if Japan ends up importing rather less than the 200,000 it wants. Look at Japan's prior record.

The recent "highly skilled worker" program failed, because they set the qualifications absurdly high. The Immigration Bureau seemed to believe that if they just set out their shingle, all the world's Nobel Laureates would come flocking to their door. It didn't work out that way.

The Philippino nurses program was a total disaster, because they demanded that the nurses pass a Japanese medical exam within 2 years. That means, not just learning Japanese and the joyou kanji, but also learning the 1000s of extra medical kanji, after just 6 months of language instruction and 18 months of working in Japan. There were two kanji geniuses who somehow managed to pass the exam, and one of them promptly turned round and went back to the Philipinnes because she was sick of being treated as a second-class hired hand.

The trainee worker program is an ongoing national scandal. It was touted as a way to give foreigners training in advanced industrial skills. How nice. But in truth, it's an abusive guest worker program that is routinely criticized in human rights reports. Check out, for instance, the annual human trafficking report published by the US State Department.

I could go on....
