Time magazine ran an article awhile back touting Texas as a business-friendly, libertarian paradise. I guess the place would depend, in part, on your business ethos. |

Yes, this. I think if we knew the answer to that question, Trina, we could be of much more help to you. |

I can't speak for those other locales, but if you're just looking for good ideas, and really want to think outside the box, I know Florida is in dire need of a place to get good snow plows and other snow equipment. And I mean an actual brick and mortar store, not a web-based operation. Now I know some may scoff at this in light of the looming climate change crisis that may warm the state up even more and possibly cause part of the state to be swallowed up by the rising seas. In that case you could hedge your bets by investing in the floating house industry - ala Holland. Look to the Dutch Trina, look to the Dutch! |

Sorry, we offer tutoring, exam prep, mock interview, resume help, pretty much anything needed to help succeed in furthering education, career, we provide.
Esl_prof yes that's actually my #1 place and I found some pretty promising looking places there on Officelist but all of us are bringing different cities/states to the table so we are still discussing it. |

Who's your target audience for this business? I ask because we're solely English language teachers (generally teaching in a university program) and aren't involved in the type of services you mention unless it's in the context of language learning and on a regular basis.
That said, I suggest doing some research in those five states to find out if similar services are offered by language schools, community colleges, vocational/technical schools, non-profit literacy organizations, public libraries, places of worship, government job assistance agencies, etc. It will help you determine supply and demand as well as forecast your business' potential for sustainability. |

Piggybacking on what Nomad said, I'd recommend going to the library and picking up a few books on how to start your own business (aka The Idiot's Guide to . . . ). Pay special attention to things like market research, writing a business plan, etc. Texas, for example, may have great office space, but if there isn't a demand for the services you plan to offer, then that may not be a viable location. Once you get a feel for which markets are viable, then try to identify your niche. What distinguishes your business from Competitor A and Competitor B? In other words, how can you best position yourself to take advantage of the market? |

Piggybacking on esl_prof piggybacking on me, don't overlook the available resources and information from the US government's Small Business Administration (www.sba.gov/). |
