Nomad Soul thanks for the link. Finally something that is written in English that regular folks can make heads or tales of. Though I did find this part very disturbing..

"You may have US tax filing obligations even if you aren't earning any money but are married to someone who did have income."

I wonder if that includes a foreign spouse or just an American one...

Only a Merican one. Where's your spouse from, or are you thinking long term?

File separately. If you filing jointly and your spouse is American or perm res or has income from a US source then they may have to pay.

I was just thinking long term. Doubt I will find an American who wants to keep traveling and living aboard possible for ever. Razz

Really, at least not any my age or from America. I have met 20 year olds who think that.

I can assure you that there are many thousands of US citizens who are essentially permanently expatriated. Including some of us here.

I personally know a half dozen of my US EFL ex-colleagues who are permanent residents of other lands.

It's not so terribly uncommon, in my experience.

John

What is "my age"? I know quite a few Americans who spent the majority of their career teaching abroad, have now retired in their adoptive land, and have no plan to ever return to the US.

Yep. Really. Been abroad nearly 12 years now and I've been people young and old. Married and single. Childless and with children. All who don't want to go back. Many retire overseas. Some are even on this board.

How old are you?

It kinda feels good, tho, to come home and work for all the "smarty-pants" here who have never spent any appreciable time abroad and fashion themselves as "experts"! Laughing Rolling Eyes Laughing

Dear Fifth Column,

The problem is - they just made me a temporary smarty-pants (until they can hire a real smarty-pants ESL Coordinator.) Very Happy

John

The difference here, sir, is that yer pants are, indeed, smart.

Obviously, you aren't managed by small people...

Dear Fifth Column,

Thanks for the kind words. But, in all honesty, I'm only smart enough to know how very ignorant I am of so many things. Very Happy

Regards,
John
