I just arrived a week ago to start a new teaching job at a university in Shenzhen. My school failed to inform me that I needed to bring the originals of my police report and diploma with me (I thought I just needed to show the originals at the embassy to get the z visa; now they say I need them here).

Are the originals ABSOLUTELY necessary for the foreign expert certification, or is there any possibility they would accept copies.

Also not sure if this matters at all, but I teach at a professional school, not TEFL, and would be showing a diploma of an advanced degree. My school thought they might be less suspicious since it seems the policy is to crack down on English teachers with fake BAs?

Any advice/experience apprecaited.

You would produce copies of them with your application to your school. If authentication is required (I hear that some schools require it again), then you'll send the original along with your application to the Chinese consulate.

I've never been asked to produce my degrees once I arrive, but I carry my U.S. and Chinese authenticated degrees with me . It impresses FAO's who have seen only 81/2"x 5" degrees in Life Experience.

You need to ask your employer if they'll accept copies. If they do then you should be OK, if they don't then you've got a problem.

My current employer asked for the original degree parchment, and since I had it with me, no problems.

Maybe I should be more clear with what I'm asking.

I'm in China already. My Z visa was processed by the Chinese embassy in DC. I finished the healthcheck in China. My next step is the interview for something about a foreign expert certificate. This is what my university says requires the original of the diploma and the background check.

So has anyone been able to pass the foreign expert certification with just copies, or do I need to get my originals sent to China? I'm NOT asking about whether you need originals for a z visa. I have the z visa; I'm trying to get the residence permit.

That doesn't make sense.

To get a Z-visa they should have mailed you two documents, one is a letter of invitation, the other is a foreign expert certificate.

You shouldn't need to get it after you arrive.

Nah, I think you're confused. They don't send the FEC. They send an invitation letter and a working permit.

The FEC is the little blue book that looks sort of like a passport.

Foreign expert work permit, not the booklet.

I'm not talking about the work permit. I'm talking about the foreign expert's certificate that you apply for after getting your z visa and arriving in China.

I thought the OP was talking about the FEC (the blue booklet). If not I have no idea what they mean.

I'm talking about the FEC. I don't know why people keep bringing up the work permit.

I think we're both confused Laughing

What I'm trying to say is the OP shouldn't have to do anything upon arrival. The school should have to submit the same documents submitted when the applied for the foreign expert work permit plus an in country medical, that is of course unless the jurisdiction he's in is different from mine.

I should have added that qualifier earlier, sorry!

True. I don't remember having an interview to get my FEC. Though this is China so anything's possible.

I'm not asking about an interview. I'm asking whether I MUST submit the original documents, or photocopies like I used to get the work permit?

The school says they think I need originals, but I do not have them with me.

You can inquire again if you really need originals but in the end if the employer says you need them, then you need them. You may want to think about getting any documents you need sent over.
