Please can I have some up-to-date information on the reputation of this company as I am currently negotiating a position with them.

Has anybody recently begun employment with them that I can speak to?

Are you talking with a guy named David Valley? He sent me an offer and I started laughing. In the contract it said I would get paid 25 days after I completed the work (Feb 25 for my work in Jan). With that and other things, I decided not to accept his offer.

I cannot believe this woman is still allowed to hold a business license in China. Did anyone bother to Google "China ESL Scam". There are like 50 threads of complaint about that company going back as far as 2009!

According to the posts at thebeijinger.com she is using new names and websites with 18 new email addresses and a couple of foreigners using the names of "David Valley" and "Jimmy" to bird dog for her. I think this China ESL is probably responsible for quite a few teachers being deported because all of their teachers are imported with L Visas.

Does China ESL advertise under their own name here at Dave's?

"David Valley" does not exist. He is some foreigner also using the name of "Jimmy" and "Robert Wilson". As we write about them here on firums they will probably change yet again.

I don't know how much they are paying this guy but without a foreign voice on the phone, I think China ESL would have no hope to recover from all the bad press they got all over the internet. Maybe it is the "Craig Hill" guy that was working for them last year?

David Valley does exist - at least on the internet where he posted his photo here in the comments section to tell the world that China ESL is now "under new management" (his) after he claims the Chinese HR girl was the big problem and now both she and the owner are gone. Convenient story.

http://www.chinaforeignteachersunion.org/2012/12/china-foreign-teachers-union-posts-esl.html

I don't think tigers can change their stripes - at least that is what some Chinese professor told me. I find it interesting that this old 2006 thread was "locked" just as the discussions were getting detailed and interesting.

http://forums.eslcafe.com/job/viewtopic.php?t=35714

But then that woman teacher Katherine Cox came to Dave's and a lot of other forums to publish her contract where China ESL took 66% of her wages which actually said she would be "blacklisted" if she quit her job or filed complaints against the company with any government body.

So how does a company who has such a bad history stay in business for eight years? Proof positive that foreigners have no protections in China from employer abuse. Check this out (from thebeijinger.com)

If you want to know the type of person Rebecca Tang is, here is an article about her in the China Daily:

"ChinaESL advertises teaching vacancies on websites and in Beijing listings magazines, such as The Beijinger. When a China Daily reporter approached them posing as an executive looking to hire expats by the hour for corporate meetings, a member of staff surnamed Tang responded by offering a price list.

"We charge 600 yuan for an hour and 3,000 yuan for the day," she said. "I can promise you they will look and act like professionals during your event (our laowai) are all experienced and know what they are doing.

"You can choose from different skin colors and accents if you want them to talk," she added.

Later that same day, the China Daily reporter called ChinaESL and asked the same question, only this time revealing their true identity. "We only provide foreigners for English language teaching positions, that's all," the customer service worker insisted before hanging up the phone."

Looks like she's conning both her employees and her own countrymen.

Neither does the shadowy illegal organization you keep hawking.

Once again, another blatant set up by a fake account, responded to by a third fake account, and finished by the master of BS, RWA himself.

Whether "David Valley" is real or not doesn't matter. What matters is that China ESL is a bad apple agency that keeps peddling itself with new company names and websites, emails, and telephone numbers and for 8 years has been telling foreigners they "misunderstand China visa's laws". When I spoke with them last year via my recruiter, I was told that "There is no problem to work on an L visa during your 90 day probationary period." As I said before, I had no reason not to believe them. And BTW... according to the China labor laws for someone to work a 90 day probation period, they should be offered a 3 year contract. 1 year for every month of probation in the standard rule, although I don't think I'd want to sign with any Chinese company for more than a year.

According to posts at the beijinger and eslwatch.info, China ESL's latest front is "NEW LIFE ESL".

Again I say that a big red sticky should be on page one advising the mandatory Z visa requirement and exposing all those agents who say otherwise. That sticky should also say in big bold letters...

"TEFL CERTIFICATES ARE NOT REQUIRED TO TEACH IN CHINA!" as my recruiter and others con people into believing that unless they buy a TEFL course, they cannot possibly find a job teaching in China.

I have been offered a position in Beijing with him.

We spoke at great length about the Z visa etc etc and then when it came to it he offered me the Business visa M.

Heard nothing but bad things about him.

He used to have that chinese chick work for him but she had a baby and moved onto new things so he now has valley organisation.

He is full of s**t

I didnt even have an interview with him... he just told me I had the job.

Wow, and you figured that out without the help of the legendary 'CFTU'? You must be some sort of savant, or super-genius.

Please note, my sarcasm was not direct at you, Vaxa. Just I find it unbelievable that somebody, who has read the stickies, has never been to China, and did a little bit of research could figure that coming on the business M visa would be a bad idea...

Using a foreigner to front for China ESL aka Total ESL aka New Life ESL (David Valley) will probably work if people don't visit forums and do some due diligence. People should wonder why the Chinese woman owner (Rebecca Tang) does/did the following:

1- Uses three names and websites (that I know of) to recruit teachers (China ESL, Total ESL, and now NEW LIFE ESL) If you are legit you only need one right?

2- Tells her agents and staff to only use their "English" names or a fake Chinese name like "Michelle Zhang" the recruiter who hooked me.

3- Tells her staff to only meet with teacher prospects at the KFC, UBS, or Costa Coffee close to the Xidan subway station - and never bring them to here office that has 8 company names listed next to the door.

4- Uses a contract that openly tells the teacher they "will be blacklisted" if they quit or cause problems.

5- Do not give the teachers a copy of their contracts unless they refuse to work without receiving it.

6- Do not put chops (corporate seals) on their contracts

7- Business cards of their recruiters have no addresses - only disposable free email addresses and a mobile phone number, and not even a logo!

8- Why they only talk about visas on the phone and never in an email (the email would be evidence they are telling people to break the law)

9- Why teachers NEVER get the job that was advertised and which they applied for? These people are the bait and switch champions of China.

10- Why they never denied the accusations that their former employee "Becky" made in the thread started by "Bannoy" at thebeijinger.com or the one at fraudwatchers (Becky says that Rebecca hires a hacker to delete complaints on line or offers to advertise more ads on forums if the negative posts are deleted).

I already posted the China Daily article about what she did and said in another thread so then... why is this snake allowed to remain in business for eight fricking years even with this...

In regards to your point about never speaking about visas over email...

David Valley has basically told me via email he knows it is illegal for me to come over and work on an M visa explaining it's just to get past customs, however he can pull some strings to sort people out with the job with no trouble on the M visa.

At least he is being honest lol

My agent told me it was normal you work on an L visa during the "probationary period" when they recruited me under one of their many aliases "Total ESL" and within six months I was caught, arrested, fined and deported. They will say whatever you need to hear to sign a fricking contract. David Valley should be banned from China for telling people to break the law.

Lately this Dave Valley fellow has claimed to be the new owner of China ESL (at eslwatch.info) and that all the problems below were the doing of one HR girl who he terminated. Unfortunately however, some of the below links go back to 2007! Lastly, today I checked with the Beijing SAIC licensing office and there is no "David Valley" name appearing on any China ESL registration files - only the original 2006 owner: Dr. Rebecca Tang.

Last but not least, check out the illegal contract that China ESL uses to sign up teachers. This sucker is outrageous!
