Hi everyone, especially those who have taught English/paid rent in Beijing. I have been offered a state school job in Beijing. The salary is 13,000 per month, and there is no accommodation provided. I do also get a 5000 yuan payment when I arrive. Teaching 20 hours per week. It was arranged by the Beijing Chaoyang District Vocational Education And Industry Corporation Centre.
Does anyone know of these people and can anyone recommend them? [/b]Living costs: Does the salary quoted seem reasonable/liveable for someone in Beijing? How much rent am I likely to have to pay for (a) a single apartment, (b) a room in a shared apartment in Beijing?

The salary is reasonable but the fact there's no accommodation throws a spanner in the works. Depending on where the school is located, I'd imagine rent to be at least 4,000 a month for a single apartment.

Don't know the outfit, but agree that 4000 is likely the minimum or near for an apartment in the area (never lived there but have Chinese friends who do). So really it's 9000 or less for 20 hours. Hard to say if that is decent for BJ. Public transportation is cheap, but if you need taxis often, that would really eat into your salary. And of course there are many distractions available in Beijing and the availability of western food at high prices. Also, if you find your own apartment, you will likely need to fork over at least a few months' rent to just get in the door.

Lacking accommodation sucks, and 9000 in Beijing is a little low. On the bright side, at least you get to choose where you live and not someone else. So if something bugs you when you see a place, you can move on. Others might care less about the living conditions.

Nah!
A newbie needs to have on-campus accom provided. Save the living off campus for Year 2 - or never.
If you do take up the deal, ask if there is a 7-Days Inn nearby. They are the best and cheapest I've encountered.
There are numerous posts on Dave's about living off campus but a key one for me is an on (or near) campus flat means you have somewhere to go if you have a split shift i.e 8 to 10 and then 3 to 5.

7 Days Inn locations Beijing;

Believe me if you've been traveling for 20 hours you need a decent place to crash on arrival.
But school-provided accom on campus is infinitely preferable!

In 2011, I was paying 3000 RMB for a studio in Chaoyang district. It was between the 4th and 5th ring roads near gaobeidian metro stop. Not bad actually. It was in a standard Chinese community with a bunch of identical looking apartment buildings.
