Hey all,
I've been working at a fantastic little eikaiwa in Chiba for the past six months. Life has been great, everyone's been happy, etc etc. Unfortunately, I recently learned that my fiancee will be transferred to Kyoto by her company.
I have about 3 years of English teaching experience (and about 5 total of language teaching) but not TESOL/TESL/CELTA etc. I've got decent savings and I'll be living in company provided housing, so I can afford to hang out and wait for a good job to come along. I'd like to cut down on the wait time, though, so I have a few questions.
1) Are there many jobs in Kyoto at all? Online job sites seem to have nothing except for part-time one day a week crap or a "Kansai area" Berlitz position. I really don't want to commute 1.5 hours to Osaka or Kobe.
2) What are some big suburbs near Kyoto with lots of jobs? I've been searching for towns between Kyoto and Osaka/Kobe and towns in Hyogo and Shiga, but no luck. (At least nothing that's not part time.)
3) Any reputable schools that you know or that I should look out for? (And of course, in the remote chance that anyone knows someone who's leaving or a place that needs someone, send me a PM!)
I hope I gave enough info to get some useful advice. If you need more detail, please ask. |

Having to work in Kobe or Osaka is kind of normal.
Having a commute of an hour is typical.
Getting work in Kyoto is tough.
Be prepared to have an interview in both languages.
N3 or higher is just expected. Don't expect good pay. |

I went to Kansai Gaidai in Hirakata. It has a decent amount of eikaiwas, and isn't too far from Kyoto via express train.
As was said, Kyoto is really competitive. While Hirakata is much closer than Osaka city proper. |
