Depends.
The invitation letter the school sends to you will *need* to specify which embassy you will collect it from. If it says "Collect in Canada" and you try in Kuala Lumpur you'll be turned away. Even if it says "Collect in Kuala Lumpur" the embassy in KL doesn't appear obliged to actually issue you the visa - they have their own rules that seem uncontrolled by the PSB actually in the mainland. There's a growing trend for Chinese embassies and consulates in third countries these days to only issue the visa to citizens of their country or foreigners on longer stays (Working or Residence).
I remember getting berated on here a few years ago because I had applied successfully for a Z visa as a tourist in Thailand and had reported that it's okay to do so there - a few months later someone based on my advice had applied there under the same circumstances, been rejected and somehow assumed it to be my fault. Point being even if someone got their Z in Delhi last month doesn't mean it'll be okay for you to do it this month. Hong Kong is notorious for changing their regulations for different provincial applications, applicant nationalities etc. more often than the Consul picks his nose and wipes it under the desk - and by all reports that's near daily.
Only the embassy you wish to apply from can really tell you 100% if they'll accept your application, and even then...... |

Though your visa will be issued in Canada, this doesn't mean that YOU have to go to Canada to get it.
There are service agents that will accept your passport and letter of invitation and submit it to the Consulate / Embassy for you (for a price) and then mail it back to you, stamped with the visa.
Might be worth searching one out to save the RT airfare and headache involved with doing it yourself...
In the USA, Travel Document Services is one that offers the "mail in" service for $80 per passport, plus FedEx shipping. |

Assuming the OP is not in China either? Has anyone ever used a visa agent to get their z-visa and had it sent back to them in China then taken a quick trip down to e.g. HK and re-entered on the new z? Or would all hell break loose exiting China when the guys at passport control see the unused z on the wrong side of the border? |

^^ This is the way I imagined it would go. To attempt efficiency at border crossings, I use a paper clip to close off the pages of my passport that I do not want stamped. Maybe this would work to keep the new Z Visa from prying eyes until you need it for entry? |

Yes, that could work. But what about if the z-visa is right opposite the current RP/visa or the paperclip makes the officer curious about what it is that is being hidden? Would the uncancelled z be ignored, cancelled immediately, passport holder briefly questioned, interrogated,... What would happen?
EDIT just realised the above scenario could not happen. During the z application process the current RP/visa would be cancelled, yes? So if someone tried to get a z or other visa from outside China while still in China s/he would be screwed when exiting China. Yes? |
