Hello,
I've had a search though the forums and haven't been able to find this question anywhere else, but feel free to link me if it has been covered elsewhere. Anyway...
I'm considering looking for a job in or near Bangkok. I have a BA and MSc in unrelated social sciences, and one year experience in Korea but no CELTA.
Does anyone have an idea of the maximum I might be likely to earn?
Thanks. |

Yes the maximum salary you are likely to earn is about Baht 35,000/Monthly....as you have no formal teacher qualifications. Upcountry expect about Baht 30,000/Monthly....with the possibility of freeThai style accomodation at your school. Do not come to Thailand for the money....little or no savings possible..come here for the edutainment experience!!! |

If you want earnings/savings then stay in Korea.
Fresh off the plane with no connections you are looking at 30-40k thb ($1000-1250)/month with no benefits working below the tertiary level.
Working at a uni as a TEFL teacher you are looking at even lower wages (20-25k thb) but there are options to supplement your income.
Under current rules, except at the tertiary level, you have a maximum of 4 years as a teacher before you need to either get licensed as a teacher (requires that you obtain a teacher certification program (Dip.Ed, PGCE, M.Ed, etc)) or leave.
After all of that is said, IF you make some connections there are decent, well paid options for those with graduate level credentials. It's all about the networking.

If you want to supplement your TEFL income in Thailand you may consider acting. The only catch is you would have to learn how to speak Thai...and act as a Thai. I believe they pay part time edutainers around Baht 500/Hour on TV comedy sitcoms. Good luck! |
