I am a licensed teacher in the US, degree in sec ed and 7 years experience in public high schools. If I were to get my Thai teaching license how much do you think I could make there, not teaching in the big International Schools? What good options would I have other than the IS's? |

As a licensed teacher you'd be far better off looking at public schools in Taiwan, the NET program in Hong Kong or Korea.
Teaching EFL (in Thailand) you are looking at 30-60k with no benefits.
Teaching subjects in an I.S. you are looking at 60k (local hire) to 130k + benefits (hired from abroad).
Teaching EFL at the tertiary level you are looking at 20-30k but fewer class hours.

If you have a first degree, CELTA, and a couple of years experience together with the ability to demonstrate to some of the more reputable schools that you can do the job, you should be looking at around 50k a month plus flights, health insurance and 30-35 days paid holidays.
The British Council will pay roughly 65-90k a month depending on your entry point on the 10 point salary scale and, although most of the teaching jobs in Bangkok are internal at this level, it isn't an entirely closed shop. Benefits include flights, hotel upon arrival for 1/2 weeks, settling in allowance, medical coverage etc.
IELTS experience will open the door to both the BC and IDP, who pay up to 70k a month plus benefits. |
