Does anyone know of any good universities that have job openings for ESL? I"m also looking at oil companies. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks |

Dear HavCrick,
The list that Fatboy posted is, in my opinion, accurate. May I ask if there is ANY university or oil company in Saudi that you WOULD consider working for?
While I certainly agree that no outfit in Saudi is a fun place to work for, I'd say that Fatboy has listed pretty much the best of the worst . So, if you disagree with the choices, could you provide a different list?
Implying that Fatboy is a "recruiter" is uncalled for.
Regards,
John |

kfupm and kaust are the only real universities in ksa. The rest are just imitation. |

yeah, HavCrick is off the mark. Nothing wrong at all with working for Aramco, even if you are employed by a contractor... well 90% of the contractors. |

By imitation, you mean...? Compared to western educational standards? Seriously, we're English language teachers and not academics with PhDs teaching content.

I agree that PMU shouldn't be on that list; however, the other universities listed aren't as horrid as you think. For example, KAUST, which ARAMCO built and operates, has a solid world ranking. It's especially unique in that it's the Kingdom's only coeducational public university. Female students freely drive around the campus and don't wear the hijab. Additionally, only a third of their students are Saudi. |

*shudder*
As VS has informed this forum many times, KAUST's English program is relatively small as the typical KAUST student arrives with English skills. It's more of a language lab. I arrived in the Kingdom in 2009, the first year co-educational classes were offered and considered it an exciting time to enter the Kingdom. I took a glance at the web presence of KAUST's English program in late 2012 and was, by then, unsurprised to see it headed by a NNEST. Here's a sample from that periodIntegrated Academic Language Skills covering all the four skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing.
Academic Writing Skills which focuses on aspects of good academic writing, including syntax, structure, language usage, paraphrasing and summarizing.
Pronunciation and Prosody which emphases on the nature and production of sounds with a view to refining pronunciation.
Oral Presentation Skills with tips for effective presentation techniques, where students can practice in the context of scientific environments.
See anything wrong?
It's been updated since. It's my guess the native-speakers have been given a little more trust and allowed to eliminate the errors and balderdash passed off by an all too typical administrator saddled with a low proficiency and high status.

Much harder... when you have less than 5 teachers... if even that many, it is much harder than a place the size of ARAMCO.
While ARAMCO seems to have some relationship to KAUST - especially in snapping up the best of its graduates - I doubt that they have much input into daily operations. While they know what their employees need to know, I don't think they know much about world MA and PhD education. Hopefully they are smart enough to turn that over to the professionals.
Wandering around on their website, it seems that there is a grand total of one female (Chinese? Korean?) professor, but an interesting mix of nationalities.
I also note the odd use of Et for 'and' or '&' - where does this come from? Anyone know?

From graphic designers. It's known as an 'et ligature' and is another form of an 'ampersand'.

Its unicode is that of an ampersand; it's a font variant. |

Could be bad coding. A keystroke or two that their software doesn't recognize? |

Not worth the argument. You will either try it and like it, or try it and hate it. For the one's who disagree with me, I wonder how long you have lived and worked here......I've been here for 10 years and seen the whole system (including the gold standard KFUPM) go downhill.
They are tired of paying the money required to get experienced, qualified teachers to come here. PMU tried to cut salaries by almost $1k per month. Instead, they cut 2 months off the end of contracts.
In other words, if you do not renew, you lose 2 months pay; even though it is a 12-month contract. Further, they refuse to pay teachers that take their summer vacations until they return. That way, if you decide to not return, you lose about $7k.
As a matter of fact......the Vice Rector at PMU came from KFUPM. |
