A friend of mine just got back from living in Rio de Janeiro for a couple of months. When flying into Santiago, Chile, he used an airport ATM. The ATM was hacked and all the funds in his checking account were wiped out.
I asked my friend how to avoid this from happening to me when I go to live in Peru. He told me that it was best to only use ATMs located inside banks. Any truth to this?
Also, I have read that many of the ATMs charge fees to withdraw cash. Is there a way to avoid withdrawal fees?
Is it possible to set up a checking account in a foreign bank? Would it not be easiest to withdraw money straight from your regional South American bank?
Thanks for the help! |
