Why is this not a big issue? The vote is coming and with the crap the English (or pretenders) have been slinging it looks likely. Will be interesting either way. |

Do you mean why isn't it a big issue on this forum Wang? If so, why should it be?
If you mean in Scotland to the Scottish people then it most certainly is and is pitting friend against friend, brother against brother and so on.
The Pretenders (to what exactly do you think they pretend?) are mostly probably watching with interest and a little concern but with no vote on the issue there is nothing they can do anyway. |

Brother pitted against brother, eh? Partition seems likely then. It is the tried and trusted way to defuse internecine violence. Ireland, Palestine, India. All rip-roaring successes. Perhaps Scotland too? |

Well part of me wants it to happen but purely to observe from afar the resultant car crash. |

Which part do you think will be a car crash? Independence or partition? |

As they have always been a country in their own right I fail to see how they could have partition? |

Today’s secessionism has everything to do with majority intolerance (or at least insensitivity) to minority needs. Margaret Thatcher is widely held to be the unwitting architect of the Scottish independence movement, just as Franco’s chauvinistic tyranny inspired Catalonian nationalism.

Piffle. There has always been an undercurrent. |

The Independence Movement has been around for a long time. The current SNP was founded in the 1930s. In the 19th Century there was "The League For The Vindication of Scottish Rights". Thatcher and her policies merely speeded up the process. |

I reckon the biggest impetus was giving them their own parliament. Gave them a taste of what might be and Salmond is trying to flog them a contract they should sign without knowing fully what it entails. |

To whom is that question addressed ? I take it from this and other posts that you suffer from the misconception spread by the metropolitan media that the move to autonomy is a sinister plot created by one man.
A bit of wider reading might be an idea for you, laddie.

India and Ireland weren't countries in their own right. Classic piggie argument to justify imperialism.
Anyway, partition is used when the British Empire wants to retain some sort of influence on the colonies that are being 'given back'. Artificially dividing nations by fostering religious or minor ethnic differences was always a popular approach. How many English live in Scotland? How many unionist Scots are there? Enough to justify a similar act to the Government of Ireland Act? Have to make sure the rights of 'minorities' are protected, dontchaknow... |
