The 16 yr. old son of a student of mine has difficulties in analyzing texts in English class (as well as his native language). She had asked me if I had any tips. I've done some online research, but haven't really found anything useful.
Other than working with the boy myself to help him practice (and I'm not sure how I'd do that), I really can't think of or find any tips.
Is there anyone that would have ideas or point me to a website I could check out? |

Have you identified the source of the problem? In other words, does he lack sufficient knowledge of grammar and vocabulary to decode the texts in question. Or is he having trouble tracking main ideas and supporting points through the text. If it's the latter, SQ3R or similar methods (google them) can be helpful. If it's the former, he probably needs to be practicing with lower-level readings while continuing to build his grammar and vocabulary. |

I think he is good at summarizing the text, but when I looked up the SQ3R method I found a section on reading critically. I think this is what his mother was saying he is having problems with. Thanks for the ideas. |

You may well be facing a case of dyslexia that just hasn't been diagnosed, or has been diagnosed but rejected by the parents. |
