So...as an American, it's hell getting a license here (imo). Took me 9 tries. Anyway, it's only for two years. I'm planning on moving back home when my contract is up, but I would hate for the Japanese license to expire due to how difficult it was for me to get and just for in case I do come back sometime down the road doing anything BUT English teaching (Eikaiwa or ALT work). ALT work is better health wise, but frustrating. Eikaiwa is slightly more fulfilling but bad on my health. I'm planning to return home and finish my teaching cert. finally. I am still semi interested in ESL and EFL...but other concentrations too. In other words I just want to do regular schoolwork and if in Japan, I'd want to work in an international school (which was always my original goal).

How can I keep it current if I won't be residing here? Is this even allowed?

Kind of doubt it since you need a Japanese address.
If I move back to the US I would just change my address to that of my in-laws.

I assume up in Yamagata that you had to get the license in winter, since they want to check your winter driving.
