I want hear about anyone's experience of turning down a job offer, for whatever reason, and being hired later by the same school.
I had to turn down a good job offer because I didn't think the paper work would be done in time. I didn't want to face the prospect of being unemployed in a foreign country and being unemployed at home. (I currently have a teaching job).
I explained the situation to the director: I had to renew my passport, get VN visa, and get FBI check.
I told them from the beginning that my passport was good until Feb. 2015. I only got the paperwork requirements (including 1 year valid passport) when the job was offered. The document was sent from the admin, so I'm not sure if the director knew what paperwork was required.
I'm qualified (MA ESL, CELTA, over 2 years of experience), so I'm wondering if the director would offer me the job again at a later date. |

I would politely state that if this is the case, VN is not a good choice for you. While there are a few jobs that work out well, it is really pot luck getting them, and you usually do not know if it is truly good (also if you can stomach the place and if they want to keep you around) until you are in it.
Often we do not know who is making these decisions on who is hired, who is valued, who is not. We often do not know what their reasons are, when we do, we are often surprised. Beautiful blue eyed blonde female from England or North America? What great qualifications you have! Yours? Could be overkill in most places, your expectations could be too high. Not just financial expectations, but expectations about a minimum level of performance from their end.
This place is best for folks who can live with or without the work. Then, you can have a fine old time. Never need these people more than they need you. Desperate job seekers tend to degrade the work scene. |

It's possible.
Get in touch with the school (and preferably the director, the admin guys probably won't pass your email on). Be very polite and very professional. Give a short but sufficiently detailed explanation of why you had to turn down their offer on this occasion, you're sorry about it, and make it very clear that you would like to be considered again for any future opportunities.
Remember that in VN there is a huge gap between admin people and the DoS; they probably rarely speak to each other. They must have liked you the first time; maybe they'll like you again but you should contact the DoS directly if possible.
Many schools have ongoing recruitment. At worst it does you no harm. At best it gets you the job. Meanwhile, get a new passport. |

A lot of the cracker-jack "schools" will blacklist someone for simply turning down employment. But some of the better ones will give you a second-chance, it never hurts to try. |
