Ella Frances Sanders publishes Lost in Translation which illustrates words held to be untranslatable, to English equivalents, from their native languages.
Here's an excerpt of ten.
Over the years, I've seen a few such lists, but wanted to post these because they're illustrated. |

Dear buravirgil,
I think "glaswen" could be pretty well translated by "smirk."

I read a little of Beckett for a while; he had some strong opinions about translations.
Smirk and smile are cognates for sure, and Sanders translates "blue smile" as sarcastic and mocking, while my dictionary defines smirk as v. smile in an irritatingly smug, conceited, or silly way and
n. a smug, conceited, or silly smile.
A conceited person certainly could smirk to mock, but I read the German as more narrow than the English.
Or maybe Sanders needs you as an editor |

My smirks are ALWAYS sarcastic and mocking.
