My girlfriend teaches English at a music university in Kanagawa.
She said that the administration is considering ending the foreign language requirement, so English and other foreign languages will be optional, and only electives.
Has anyone heard of this at other Japanese universities? |

There is apparently no law that says students must study English in their freshman year though its a popular subject for many students. At my university students can take all English courses in the first two years or English and one other foreign language (elective), or two foreign languages. As Im at a large Liberal Arts university most students have to choose a foreign language as a core subject but it doesnt have to be English but they need something like 8 credits a year of studying English and/or another language. |

All the students in my university have to take at least one English course in both their first and second years. These compulsory classes are enormous and a real pain in the @ss. On the plus side, it guarantees me a job. |
