So for the upcoming holiday Sunday, September 28th and Saturday, October 11th are make up days.
What I am wondering is what day is being made up for concerning each day.

| I was told those exact same days as you were, if you find that at all reassuring. In my case Sunday September 28th makes up for Wednesday October 1st and Saturday, October 11th makes up for October 2nd. I'm glad there are only two make-up days. Of course, I don't know if this same applies to you. |

Same here. Monday's class this Sunday and the Tuesday class the Saturday after the holiday. |

The holiday is 3 days:
Wednesday, Oct. 1
Thursday, Oct. 2
Friday, Oct. 3.
Then you have your weekend as normal, Saturday and Sunday, Oct 4-5.
In order to make it a week-long "holiday", you also get Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 6-7 off.
This Sunday, Sept. 29, makes up for Oct. 6 and then Saturday, Oct. 11, makes up for Oct. 7th.
I had read a couple of years ago that "they" were thinking of eliminating this so-called "golden week" and just have October 1st as a one-day holiday and throw in a couple more one-day holidays throughout the year to make up for it. Maybe next year . . . |

| Can't get over these "make-up days". Most stupid thing about living in China. It's not really a holiday if you have to work 7 days in a row after your holidays to make-up the time. Even the locals think its retarded. Sorry I can't contribute much, no make-up days for me as I am at a training school, heh! (And was rewarded with 3 days off that I don't have to make-up). |

1. You're in China. It's a different country to your own.
2. Universities are run for the students, not culturally uncomfortable FTs.
3. They are the students' holidays not yours.
4. You're an employee. 'It's not really a holiday if you have to work'  |

I cannot believe THESE type of remarks are still being made on Dave's. Markness has his opinions and feelings about the make-up days/holidays situation. New teachers in this country may also feel somewhat frustrated about this situation.
Now, if a poster disagrees and posts something like: "The switching of days in order to give me a longer block of time off doesn't bother me at all. I fully support it.", then that's fine. That's another, different kind of opinion. But to lambaste a poster because his viewpoint doesn't agree with yours seems pointless. People should be able to freely post any view on any subject here at Dave's without being chastised for it - - hasn't happened in a long time, however. |

Personally I'm only one month removed from a 10 week paid summer holiday and am hardly ready for yet another week off, but I'll take it.
For those unhappy with or who can't figure out why there are make-up days then ask yourself if you'd rather have a three day holiday then go back to work. Because that's all you'd have if there were no make-up days. I prefer seven days off myself and the two make-up days aren't a problem. If you have no Monday or Tuesday classes then you have nothing to make up and can enjoy nine or ten days off. That's what I had last year, and this year I only have make-up classes on one of the two days. You might think the concept of making up two of the seven days is stupid, but no matter how you slice it you're still getting three other days off work with pay and should just be grateful for that.
As Non sequitur astutely mentioned in a previous thread where posters chimed in negatively on this all time favorite topic, the holiday scheme here is arranged so Chinese people, most of whom get little or no annual leave, have the maximum amount of time off to travel or go visit their families. It's not set up for foreign English teachers who already have more time off than they know what to do with and who are likely to just stay home getting plastered anyway.  |

If you don't like the law, I'm sure I can point you in the direction of the airport. You signed a contract to follow the law. If you can't accept what you agreed to then, "bye bye." |

I dont like make up days either,I think they suck.I do them because I have to.
I just dont understand why you cant just have a holiday without the make up days. |

The students don't enjoy the shenanigan holidays when there are make-up days involved, I ask them about it all the time and they think it's stupid too. The holidays are not made for the students either. These holidays are made by the government to maximize the amount of time they can milk out of its citizens. Chinese teachers/other locals I ask agree and laugh about how the government prides itself on giving its citizens "the most holidays in the world". The holidays made in a retarded manner is not about "tradition", it's about limiting the amount of time people have for free. Call it what you want to call it, but I'm calling a spade is a spade. They are taking advantage of people.
It's not new, but if enough people whine about it (not just foreigners, the Chinese), then maybe the government will make a change. I know the chances of that happening are slim to none, but it doesn't hurt for them to try.
Also, the holiday make-up days wasn't implemented until around 2008. Certainly a seasoned cultural veteran like you would be aware of this and realize how easily this turbulent BS thing could pass just as quickly as it was implemented.

I don't care what you say Mr. pretend westerner living in China, you and your sinister agenda are rather sad. I don't care what is says on my contract about this crap as I work for a private training school. If my students don't come in then I still get paid, I don't care.
Unlike you and the others who support this idea blindly, I care for the people. You are a blind zealot China defender and are a sad person. The LAW that you support so damn much exploits people to the max and is the only nation to do so with its holidays (I could be corrected as the Christmas Islands may have some sort of stupid policy in place as well with holidays and make-up days).
I don't even know why I reply to you as you don't bother replying ever after your one-liner snarky remarks followed up with you going and hiding in shame afterwards.
I know I am a "guest" in this country if you will, but I still have a voice and a life here. I do my job well and get paid to do so. I pay my taxes (albeit low), so I do have a voice in the matter. |
