Hello, all:

I am in Japan on a two-year student visa (I'm from the USA) which expires on 1/6/2015. I'm in the process of interviewing for a job, but the company is extremely deliberate (one person I spoke with said it took 4 months with him) and I don't think it will finish by 1/6.

My first thought was to try and convert to a Temporary Visitor permit for 90 days. But Tokyo Immigration said that is impossible - even if they were to allow me to change it (no guarantee) it would only be to a 15-day permit.

So - my other option is to fly home for a couple of weeks, and then return (or, in theory, to go to Korea or some such, but I'd as soon just visit home) and get a 90-day permit. What I need to make sure of is that there will be no issues with me getting back in after an absence of, say, two weeks.

Immigration said this should be allowed, but he said "Explain it to Immigration at the airport when you leave the country". Well, that's a problem of course, because I can't take a risk of not being allowed back in and not finding out till I get to the airport to fly home. If I can't get back into the country I need to conclude all my affairs (banking, apartment, etc) before I leave.

So then, here's my question - is there any reason why I wouldn't be allowed back into the country under these circumstances? Can I rely on that being a safe proposition? I tried to get Immigration to say that but he just kept repeating "explain that to the guy at the airport". Any assurances one way or the other would be sincerely appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Dan

From a student visa isn't there an option to look for work?

Try this out maybe?

Unfortunately I was here on a language school visa (2-year) and I don't believe there's any way I can take advantage of that option. Thanks for the suggestion, though.
