|
|
I work at a English consulting company that's mostly composed of students/clients that we teachers primarily travel to their homes/office/coffee shop to conduct class. They are mostly 1-on-1 and we must use PPT for class. Therefore, we need to use a laptop. The problem I'm having is my FAO wants me to use my own laptop to hold classes. Should we get compensated extra for the wear and tear of our own pc?
Cheers,

| Tell them your laptop imploded and you need a new one. See what happens. |

Just say no on that.
If they want you to use a PC, have them give you a PC. |

| I guess it depends on the pay. I wouldn't have any problems using my own laptop. Wear and tear? I guess I've been lucky with laptops lasting. On the other hand, there is a higher risk of loss from toting it around. Maybe you could use it for bargaining higher pay. I'd prefer using a computer I'm familiar with. |

| Take in the biggest, oldest clunker of a laptop you can find, covered with peeling stickers, questionable stains, and as many years worth of dust as possible. If you have corporate clients, your boss won't want the company to look unprofessional and will probably pay the 2,000元 for a cheap netbook. |

The wear and tear is probably less than the thumb drives and speakers I bought to use the school's computers effectively. Quite a few of the teachers here for some reason can't figure out how to use the school's computers so they bring in their laptops to show movies or video clips.
I was pissed at having to buy speakers because the cheap ass school wouldn't put speakers in one classroom but you get over it. |

Yes, the should provide one, but of course that doesn't mean they will!
My main school hasn't provided me with a laptop or PC even though most of my job involves curriculum design and other administrative work.
A kindergarten I pimp myself out to one day a week provided me with a laptop to do lesson plans on despite me telling them I didn't really need one.
Just depends on the school. |

I have a rule: NO computer or drive of mine will EVER interface with Chinese equipment. I've been through that before. I've picked up so many viruses that wreaked havoc with my computer that I just won't expose myself to that BS again. Never.

Amen on the viruses. I solved this by buying a USB drive that had a read/write switch. I keep it locked (write protected) whenever I plug it in to a school computer, and unlock it at home to load stuff on.
I don't mind using my computer for school work, but if it were a job that required me to have/use a computer, I'd insist that they provide it. Talk to them about it…they may just be seeing if they can get you to use your own. |

Trouble is, that the computer (yours or school's) is only one link in the daisy chain. If the data projector isn't working - no computer will help.
Another thing that can ruin your plans is a no-notice change of classroom to one that has no computer or projector of any kind. |

Class cancelled due to negligent administration! Why have a back up if they cannot be bothered to have one. |

Point taken but I've got this work ethic thing.
When I started in 2004, the school was such a crappy ripoff.
I vowed that I would never short change my students.
Sounds lofty I know but sometimes it's the only thing that keeps you going. |
