My mother died last week.
No funeral as the weather has been so bad in upstate New York.
One snowstorm after another.
My relatives would prefer a memorial service when the weather is better.
So if I go back sometime this month could I get a discount on the fares or not?
I think I would fly United or Delta. |

Sorry to hear that Mitsui. Delta appear to offer them
http://www.delta.com/content/www/en_US/traveling-with-us/special-travel-needs/bereavement.html
but not United Airlines.

United Airlines no longer offers bereavement fares. Formerly, they offered bereavement fares of 5% off the ticket price in the event of the death or grave illness of a family member or for individuals seeking medical treatment for tickets sold within six days of travel. |
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bereavement_flight)
From what it seems it's not exactly a discount in general, only really a discount off the price for booking immediately which would probably have a higher cost than say booking in advance. Probably not worth your while unless you wanted to travel in the next few days. |

Just as I thought,
but wanted to be sure.
I may just wait til later this month as I will clean out my mother's apartment
and do stuff like close my mother's bank account.
If I pay the March rent I have until the end of March to take care of this.
What else to do?
Well the credit card companies need to know about this but do I have to provide a death certificate?
Rent and utilities have to be paid, but I will find out about anything else. |

Sorry to hear the sad news about your mother.
I think you'll need an official death cert. to handle all of your mother's affairs actually.
And,it may be wise to talk to her lawyer too if she had one. |

No lawyer and not much money. Got divorced years ago.
It is like what the Doors said. You experience new things once you walk on through. There are things known and unknown and in between are the doors.
My uncle survived a mild heart attack, but my mother couldn't.
Got to find a place for a memorial service. Was thinking of a church but may go somewhere else but not sure where.
It is hard to get family to agree to things but compromise must happen.
When there is no will it is up to immediate relatives to make decisions.
Some Japanese save their money and the oldest child can just pay the bill, show up at the wake and funeral.
I get to make it up as I go along.
Not easy to get flights either. I will leave from Osaka and I could change in Seoul or Shanghai but then flights take too long.
I thought the fuel surcharges would be less, but 90,000 yen to New York may be the best deal I can get. |

If you can get 9 man both ways, take it and don't look back. That's excellent! |

Fares to upstate New York are a bit more expensive, but for 90,000 I'd take it (I wound up getting lucky in 2013 and my ticket back was 90k or so and I bought it the day I went back).
If you're in charge of deciding things (no other siblings or family nearby, I assume) I would simply just choose things and not worry about having family agree - by them making you choose from Japan, they forfeited their rights to complain.
Any creditors should be told about the death (car loan, for example), and the bank will probably want to see a death certificate to close the account (some do, some don't). |

No that is just from Narita to NYC.
Maybe Delta is better, I just wonder if an hour and 20 minutes is enough to clear customs and make the next flight at Detroit. |

Yeah, hate to say it, but you need a good 2 hours through customs.
BUT if you have only carry ons, you might just be OK. As evey time I went through customs, the checked baggage was what slowed me down |

Well if it is checked through to New York maybe it is OK.
I remember running at the Detroit airport ago and barely made the flight to Japan.
Maybe I will just transfer at Minneapolis.
I think Narita-Minneapolis-Newark, NJ is just 89,000 yen. |
