We can't walk across the street anymore to our local family Mall. What happened here? A meat cleaver for God's sake... I'd rather be shot in the head. Is the Aramco teacher OK?

This is an important thread to help all of us be informed. Was this a targeted hate crime? Anybody have more information?

First off, are we even certain that this happened. Although the Saudi Gazette had an article:

http://www.saudigazette.com.sa/index.cfm?method=home.regcon&contentid=20141130226004

...when I google it, nothing comes up in any Canadian or US papers.

Is there any Aramco teacher who knows anything about the facts of this case?

Attack was definitely targeted. Canadian is currently in the Aramco hospital - was in a critical condition.

Attacks are becoming more common throughout the region. another one in Abu Dhabi a couple of days ago - also, definitely targeted.

ABU DHABI: An American teacher and a mother of twins was stabbed to death in a shopping centre toilet in Abu Dhabi by a suspect in a Muslim veil, police said yesterday.

It was unclear what the motive was for Monday's attack in the upmarket Boutik Mall on Al Reem Island, which is popular with expats.

Police said the 37-year-old victim, who worked at a nursery school in Abu Dhabi, was stabbed by a person wearing a black robe, black gloves and a niqab.

Her 11-year-old twins were taken into police care until their father arrived from abroad.

Here is the video from MBC which shows the Canadian man with blood in his head and on the floor of the Mall. The Saudi is caught and is under investigation .......The Canadian is in the hospital in a stable state.

My advice is never ever challenge or argue with a Saudi in the Mall or elsewhere.
Just keep low profile and watch your back.

These are sporadic incidents; you have yet to read anything of the sort that happens every year, let alone weekly. And whoever put the Abu Dhabi details on here - that's idiotic - and should stop fear mongering - for god's sake it's a different country! Carry on your lives, be a little more vigilent, turn-off the expat 'passive' button - and actually believe crime exists in Saudi too. Goodness, in our own countries we have runaway convicts, paedos, strange-priests, pervert-spy doctors, killers, muggers, murderers, rapists - all happily on the 9'oclock train to work, playing Candy Crush. Crime is part of the democratic lifestyle - try to avoid it but denial is stupidity.

Close, it was apparently in IKEA, Just down the road from KFUPM, opposite the Mall of Dhahran, and I don't know (nor care to) where the Frugal500 hang out.

And for the "business as usual club" there is a psychological difference at least between being attacked by a random crazy and being specifically picked out as a target. Nobody I know is in a panic, but pretending nothing is going on is just as silly.

In my opinion, there is no fault in posting this information. Not everyone reads all branches of the board. They are bordering countries, and it appears to me that these two situations are related. Not that the perpetrators know each other, but that it is the same political atmosphere in the area that is leading to these crimes.

I don't consider it fear-mongering to make sure that everyone is informed of what is happening. Even if it is just to remind people to use common sense. But, I would never suggest that everyone run for the borders... all of the world is dangerous now.

It happened near or in Jarir Bookstore which is in the smaller mall over the road from Mall of Dhahran.

AFAIK, it wasn't a teacher but just a regular Aramcon.

A Saudi with a meat cleaver shouted anti-British slogans and attacked a man. It turned out that the man who was attacked was Canadian. It happened at the Pet Shop which is in the same Mall as Jareer, next to IKEA.

I hear the victim is recovering. The Saudi Man is helping police with their inquiries.
