No need whatsoever for dollars.
And as for facing recession, I wouldn't be so optimistic about the UK's prospects over the next couple of years either. Though this is hard to read about amid all the BBC coverage about what people in the US like to eat for breakfast... |

London started to sink some time ago. By the time Callaghan had become PM, it was obvious to any outside observer. North Sea Oil kept the place afloat for a little while, and helped finance de-industrialisation and foreign wars, but now..............

What? Why? What?
I'm clearly out of touch with both US and UK...have no idea what people eat for breakfast, and even less why it would be news in the UK. Does it have to do with some important export (Americans have been turned on to Nutella)?? |

Have a random look at the BBC news website. On any given day there will be at least one article about 'what Americans do'. Breakfasts, Christmass traditons, their opinions about football, various linguistic oddities, the list goes on. None of which is remotely in the interests of the British public to know.
Full scale poodleization of the UK public, and this puppy has legs on it that require no booting up... |

Well, my point is that Russian banks are find it difficult to sell dollars, and the maximum they can sell is $2000.
BTW, have you been to the shops today in Moscow? Have you not seen the price of goods are changing daily, and the Russians are stocking before the start of the new year?
I addition, because of the Rouble crisis, the workers' salary, including yours, will be cut massively in real terms.

Well, if you do not like BBC, then switch to BBC Russia, where all topics are about Russia and Moskva.
BTW, Americans do not play football, they play soccer.
Oh, before I forget, here is an updated news for you before you do any online shopping!
Technology giant Apple says it cannot sell products online in Russia because the rouble's value is too volatile for it to set prices.
"The company stopped sales of its iPhones, iPads and other products in the country after a day in which the currency went into free-fall.
The rouble has lost more than 20% this week, despite a dramatic decision to raise interest rates from 10.5% to 17%."

From the FT report:
Russians are lining up at currency exchange centers to swap their increasingly worthless Rubles for Dollars...
"Russians hurried to change their savings and pensions into dollars and euros while also stocking up on furniture and jewellery as the rouble’s collapse accelerated.
"The dramatic collapse in the rouble in recent days has not triggered outright panic, but it has prompted a rush to change currency and to stock up on durable goods such as furniture, cars and jewellery before they become even more expensive."
"Indeed, shoppers reported enormous queues even at 2am in Ikea on Monday night as people rushed to stock up before the rouble plunge triggered price rises. The Swedish furniture company had said it would be raising prices from Thursday."
"People who didn’t manage to exchange their money at 35 roubles or 40 roubles to the dollar have been buying up high-end goods, cars and apartments because a massive repricing hasn’t happened yet,” said Vyacheslav Trapeznikov, acting director of the Urals Builders’ Guild, in Yekaterinburg."
“People are trying to spend their last roubles and buy up things that haven’t been priced, but this trend has an expiration date,” Mr Trapeznikov

The Russians should have bought gold and silver, not furniture and cars, MOD EDIT |

Mushkilla, you seem to beleive you are knowledgable about the situation in Moscow, and Russia generally. Knowledge apparently gleaned from axe-grinding media sources. Yet, for those of us who are on the ground here, it is easy to spot the distortions.
Yes, the ruble is in trouble, but no, there isn't a run on banks or Ikea. Salaries are not always paid in rubles (such as mine) and so real purchasing power isn't being changed as simply as you make out. The world is a little more complicated than you seem to think, as befuddling as UK media sources may be. |

Of course if your salary is in dollars or any other foreign currency, then it means your savings is not in Rouble. But for the majority of Russians, especially the middle class, the case is different, they have to exchange their Roubles in dollars, because they do not trust Rouble' stability. The rich people in Russia do not have an idea on how poor Russian live, and the financial system is corrupted. This is the reality of things in Russia.

The reality in Russia?
As if you'd know: )
Unless of course you'd care to back up your claims with something less flimsy than your links. Have you got any connection to Russia? |

Aha! Clearly well-informed then. Perhaps Luke Harding figures in there somewhere too : ) |

It seems the two comrades Sasha and Scotty are brainwashed with the propaganda from Russian state-run media. The Rouble crisis is not in the top story of the Russian media!!
I think the history of oil crisis in 1980s is repeating itself now in Russia, and Comrade Putin cannot invade Georgia or Ukraine.

It seems the comrade of Moskva is playing a lost chess game! |

Do you follow Russian media, Mushkilla? Or do you just follow what your brainwashing babyfeed media tells you? |
