I would love to read some personal stories of people who have taught in either Dubai or Abu Dhabi. I'd like to gain some insight into the lifestyle, job, commuting time, and everything else really.

Does anyone have any personal stories to share - or links to good blogs where people have written about living and teaching ELT in the UAE?

If you google "expats teaching in UAE [Abu Dhabi/Dubai] and blogs," many links will appear. You know each individual's perspective will depend on a host of factors such as the institution where he/she works, their position, location, age & lifestyle, prior cross-cultural experiences, motivations for living and working there, etc. Everyone has his/her own "unique" perception and opinions about their experiences. Consider the sources.

Here's an article from The National newspaper in UAE about the rising costs of living there:

You should weigh all the factors before making a decision to accept a position in UAE. Housing and food costs are soaring. The educational allowance is often insufficient for higher caliber schools. Some of the institutions no longer provide housing and instead give you an allowance but often times, landlords do not speak English and without the institution's Housing Officer acting on your behalf, it may prove to be a daunting task. Housing is much higher in large areas such as Abu Dhabi or Dubai compared to smaller emirates such as Ras al Khaimah (Rak). Feel free to PM me with any specific questions you may have.
