Hi,

My girlfriend is Spanish, with an advanced level of English. We're considering both moving to Vietnam to teach English in April. It says on the TEFL website that non-native speakers can do the TEFL courses.

We're looking at the 20/30 hour weekend courses at the moment, and also considering the online options (50 hours etc) due to costs.

My key question is: will employers in Vietnam really take note of the type of TEFL certificate? For example, would my girlfriend, as a non-native speaker and only a 20/30 hour TEFL qualification, be equipped to gain employment in Vietnam?

Any thoughts/help would be much appreciated on this issue, particularly from non native speakers or anyone who's met them teaching English in Vietnam

Regards & thanks

Roger.

I think it would be difficult and frustrating for her.

She will be limited to the 3rd rate jobs - 10 usd and hour often less.

There are people working in Hanoi and other parts of Vietnam who are unqualified non-native speakers and many do a great job - to be honest a good level of non-native English is enough to teach kids the alphabet and some basic vocab anyway.

If her pronunciation is good [and many Spanish do not have good pronunciation even if they are very fluent and comprehensible when they speak English] she may pass as a native speaker in the parents eyes - unless she has very a dark complexion but if she is pale she will have less trouble.

I wouldn't bother with any fake certificates - do a real one or don't bother. Spend the money on a few good TEFL theory books and read them before you start teaching.

TEFL in VN is basically a huge JOKE. If she is WHITE and she can speak DECENT "E" she can get a job. Maybe not a great a job, but some job, somewhere around town.

BTW there are LOT'S of QUALIFIED Native-English speakers with a 120 hour REAL TEFL cert and EXP and they are BEGGING for work in HCMC, so you can imagine what "kind" of jobs your g/f will "qualify" for... But hey, come on over and LIVE the DREAM!

¡Buena suerte! Razz

I don't get this sentiment. Every country in the world has the bottom of the barrel TESOL jobs. Vietnam isn't any different than other countries in this regard, and it's a lot better than many. In fact Vietnam is probably the best country in SE Asia to teach in.

If you think TEFL in Vietnam is a joke, it probably says a lot about your own lack of qualifications. For serious teachers, there are serious jobs to be had here. For the unqualified, binge drinking, women chasing, its all about the travel experience, high school drop-outs there will be jobs for them too. They're just a lot worse.

Oh yeah, it's a real career here, so sorry you! Razz

Seems you failed to grasp my sarcastic post about "TEFL in Vietnam". Most of the schools here are locally owned/managed/run by people who barely speak English and their top requierment for a "teacher" is young, white and most importantly: "handsome".

Having a BA + TEFL/CELTA + MA TESOL and/or DELTA simple does NOT matter to employers such as these.

Maybe 10-15% of the schools here are well run, professional and actually care about the quality of instruction, the quality of the instructors and ongoing teacher & curriculem development.
