Here is a silly little question.

I'm planning to apply to AEON for their Japan program, but they ask that you apply three to four months before the date you wish to leave. Should I train for a certificate during that three to four month period, or train first and then apply? (Yes I know that certification is not required, but I think the training would be beneficial).

Thanks all!

i think you could apply and let them know that you are going for the training before you arrive in Japan. Smile

Don't know about AEON but many eikaiwas are afraid of people with experience because they figure such people will try to change their system of teaching. Having a TEFL certificate without any experience should not threaten them, but I don't know for sure.

If you have never taught English, I recommend a certificate.
If you are planning on teaching for more than a year, I recommend a certificate.

Many eikaiwas have people just chatting or casually teaching with the school's own program/format, but in my opinion, if you have some practical training/certification that teaches you how to make and present a lesson plan, you are going to be way ahead of the game, even if you are told to follow a pre-planned format.
