|
|
Hi all,
I hold an Estonian passport (EU, but not English speaking) and as far as I know, this means I can't work legally in China nor South Korea, due to the work visa requirements.
Obviously I can work in the EU, but what about the other Asian countries (Thailand, Vietnam), Latin America and Middle East? Would it be possible to get a work visa with my passport?
I'm mostly interested in visa conditions, not the requirements concerning experience, certificates etc, or the likelihood of getting a job there.
Thanks a lot! |

For the Gulf region of the Middle East, it's at the employer's discretion, given a number of variables. Obviously, preference goes to qualified native speakers with passports from Anglophone countries. But even then, there was a time when Saudi Arabia stopped issuing employment visas for Canadians due to a diplomatic spat with the Canadian government.
Anyway, this is one of those situations where you pretty much have to apply to find out, especially since you don't provide any other information. |

Most Latin American countries are pretty easy to get visas for with an EU passport. Go to the embassy or consulate webpage for the country (or countries) that you are interested in and check the requirements. You can also do a Google or Facebook search for expat groups associated with the countries you are interested in, most of which are helpful sources of information on current visa requirements. As for employment, my guess is that most employers in Latin America would consider you if you can demonstrate native or near native proficiency in English. Keep in mind, though, that most English students in Latin America are looking to learn American English not British English, which is more widely used--for obvious reasons--in the EU. |

SE Asia is possible but you will, in addition to a degree, need proof of English proficiency (TOEIC (600+), IELTS (5.5), TOEFL (not to be confused with a TEFL cert)) as one of the visa requirements.

Suphanburi are you saying that IELTS 5.5 is enough to teach in SE Asia? Seems vey low to me. |

It is the MINIMUM required to obtain a visa as a teacher within the AEC beginning this year. It was set as a requirement for Thailand 2 years ago.
Enforcement of the rules in Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar is still pretty lax. It is getting tougher in some of the other ASEAN countries.
They also must still meet the other visa requirements (degree, age, clean police check) for legal work.
