|
|
Has anyone here done a TEFL course in China and then got a job there? Are there companies who would hire you from abroad, sponsor your work visa and then wait 3/4 weeks while you finish your course before coming to collect you?
There are a few companies that organise onsite TEFL training in China followed by a teaching job, but it doesn't seem to be very common, so there's not much choice. This is unfortunate, because I'd like to have some sort of introduction to China and it would be ideal to get that assistance during a TEFL course.
The alternative for me would be to get a job in China with my current qualifications and perhaps do a TEFL course during the summer break. But I'm sure it would look better on my CV if I did the 120 hour course first, especially since I already have experience; what I need in order to apply for better jobs later on is a TEFL cert. followed by xx number of years' teaching. In some countries, prior TEFL experience doesn't count.... |

There are many TEFL courses offered in China, including the CELTA. Why not do your training in country and then go immediately into a teaching job? But frankly, it doesn't make good business sense for an employer to hire you from abroad, sponsor your work visa, and then wait for you to complete (and pass) a 4-week course. It's risky. Besides, there will always be job candidates already TEFL qualified that employers can hire asap. |

I have indeed come across TEFL courses in China and I'd like to do such a course. But unless I already have a job arranged I'll have to arrive with a tourist visa and then convert that into a work visa when I find a job. But I've read on this forum that this is an unwise thing to do. Is that not so? |

How do you know that you can convert your tourist visa to a Z visa while you're in China?
I suggest you do a little research on that subject. |

Sorry for the lack of clarity, but yes, thanks to this forum I'm well aware that would-be teachers who only have a tourist visa have to leave China to apply for their work visa. Many of them do so in Hong Kong, I understand.
But that's my point: it's a hassle, an extra expense, and potentially unsuccessful, from what I've read. My question is, it is really advisable to arrive in China on a tourist visa to do a TEFL course, look for a job and then leave the country to apply for a work visa? Has anyone here done this, and could they share some tips? |

You may not be able to change it in Hong Kong. |

He knows that. He's asking if he can take the TEFL course in China and then look for a job (also in China) without having to leave the country. Some countries let you do that. (Isn't this supposed to be one of the benefits of doing a TEFL course in the country you want to teach in?)
Case in point, my friend did a TEFL course in the Czech Republic. Upon completing the course, they (the organization that he took the course through) helped place him in a school to teach at. He didn't have to leave the Czech Republic. Pretty sure you can do that in Vietnam, too.
I know China is not the Czech Republic or Vietnam, but anyway, OP is asking if you can do that in China. |

Not much in the way of responses to your inquiry, but that's expected since a TEFL cert isn't required to teach in China.
I don't have experience with China, but there seem to be other options, although they entail getting hired outside the country:
- Go to China (on a work visa) and teach without having taken a TEFL course, but plan to enroll in one during your vacation.
- Take the course in a neighboring (or your home) country---one where you can obtain a Chinese work visa. |

Yes, you can do a tefl course and yes you can look for a job on a tourist visa. One might have to return to their country of origin as there are no promises a Z-visa will be forthcoming in Hong Kong. |
