Bosses at badly performing institutions are taking home up to £600,000 a year – four times the Prime Minister’s salary.

And while students face crippling fees, vice chancellors are spending hundreds of thousands of pounds on business class flights.

Our investigation, based on thousands of freedom of information requests, shows that:

The boss of the worst university in the country pocketed £618,000 last year;

One vice chancellor took £250,000 in bonuses even as his institution slipped down league tables;

Another claimed £60,000 in a year on business class flights and £18,000 on furnishing, phone expenses and medical insurance;

An unnamed Oxford academic picked up £630,000 last year;
Heads of failing schools and colleges are being paid as much as £300,000.
