I currently live in America and am a 25 year old male and will have a Bachelors degree in Education come May of this year (2015). What I would like to do is teach overseas come Fall of this year. Although paying off student loans is one of the things I want to do (even though I don't have a whole lot), I actually rather make a difference and help in other parts of the world while gaining experience and understanding with other cultures. I am half Iranian and know Farsi. I am not fluent in it, but i can converse in it. Now despite it being a third world country, I am currently looking into teaching over seas in Tajikistan. They speak Tajik which is similar to Farsi. I was thinking maybe I would teach over there for 2 or so years and then see if I can get a job teaching English in Dubai. I currently do not have any kind of teaching certification. What I have learned from reading on these forums is that a CELTA, trinity, or SIT are the best certifications. Although it is not best, I would really like to complete something online. I am willing to put in the hours during the evening after my student teaching.
So my questions include,
*What is a good option for me to go with for teaching English overseas certifications?
*Does anyone have an experience in teaching overseas in Tajikistan that they can share some advice about finding a job there? |

For Tajikistan info and to post your questions about teaching in the country, head to the Russia & C.I.S. discussion forum (http://forums.eslcafe.com/job/viewforum.php?f=20). I also suggest you check the TEFL cert requirements for Tajikistan since many employers worldwide expect teachers to have a CELTA/equivalent TEFL qualification and not one that's obtained online. It's not about what TEFL qualification is the easiest for you to complete---it's about what employers expect. Besides, consider that others applying for the same job(s) may likely have a CELTA.
For the UAE, in order to teach in a university foundation year program, you'll need a relevant MA (preferably in TESOL) + a minimum of three years' university-level EFL teaching experience. A BA won't get your CV a second look. There are language schools in the UAE; however, those job opportunities almost always go to qualified Emiratis or to expats who already hold UAE residency.
To teach in the country's public school system or in the better international schools, you'll need a teaching license (from the US) related to your BA and at least 2 years of relevant teaching experience in the US, gained post licensure. Frankly, this is your best bet if you're willing to pursue licensure from your home state and subsequently, teach a couple of years in a US public school. See Teach Away's site for more on UAE requirements; they're always recruiting qualified, licensed teachers. Plus, their site may have info on teaching in Tajikistan. |
