I'm going to be teaching a writing class next semester, with one of my units specifically on argumentative or persuasive essays. I am trying to think of some writing prompts to generate opinions which are strong but not uniform. However, I'm nervous about whether or not my prompts are "China-appropriate", and want to err on the side of caution. Does anyone else have any suggestions for prompts or any knowledge of things I should definitely avoid? |

Don't have topics such as "Beijing's policy on X, good or bad?", or "Japan, great cartoons... death to Japan!"
Stick to personal behavior-type topics. Examples: "University students should find girlfriends/boyfriends; agree or disagree?;" "International travel is overrated; agree or disagree;" " Intelligence isn't only measured by academic degrees." etc. Try to make the questions relevant to young people's lives. In my experience, they are interested in environmental issues, cars, sports, movies, travel, food and family, among others. |
