I have an offer in Chongqing and I'd like to know how income tax is calculated there. I've found varying accounts online and I'd like to know if the formula I was given is correct. I was given this formula:

Total Income - 4800 x .25 - 1005

So if your total salary is 15,000 RMB/month it works out like this:

15,000 - 4800 = 10,200

10,200 x .25 = 2550

2550- 1005 = 1545

Total Tax: 1545 RMB

Take home pay: 13,455

I'm getting more than 15K with the housing allowance, but according to the chart they sent me, the same numbers will apply.

If anyone could comment on the accuracy of what I've been told, I would really appreciate it.

I don't think any tax is due for salaries below 5,000. Your tax rate is much too high. I lived in Chongqing and my tax liability for 7,000 rmb was negligible. Maybe 10 rmb a month. I think the calculator here is about right, use Wuhan for a city selection and ignore the social network contribution as Chongqing doesn't participate in this yet.

I used the calculator and choose the "Foreign (No Social Insurance) option and it came to exactly the same figure 15,330 after tax.

My total salary on this job with housing allowance would be 17500.
