Where in Chengdu? It is very relative to the area.

Indeed. Alive and very well, although I left the beloved Chengdu last summer and have relocated in Beijing.

Also, very true. Wangdaning is the authority on Chengdu and such truer words have rarely been spoken.

I am most familiar with the areas around Sichuan University. If you aren't looking to go too upscale, 2,000RMB/mo. in the area around Sichuan University should be adequate enough to get a decent, safe, and clean pad.

Take a walk around prospective neighborhoods and drop in on some of the real estate places after checking out their signs in the windows to gauge what they have available for rent and what the monthly rental prices are. It would be best to go with someone else to help out. Stick to your guns when dealing with them and if you do enlist the services of an agent, be prepared to pay an agent's fee to the tune of one month's rent (or so).

Also, when you do seal the deal, be prepared to most likely pay three months of rent upfront. When I rented my pad last year, I paid my rent quarterly in three-month increments at a time. A refundable deposit of one month of rent may also be expected upon moving in.

Alternatively speaking, drop by one of the foreigner hangouts like the Bookworm and pick up some of the expat magazines (Chengdoo, etc.) and peruse those magazines' classifieds to see what's potentially available.

Hope this helps! Happy house hunting! (oh! alliteration!)

Warm regards,
fat_chris

Thanks for the responses, everyone. I've been away and so I'm late to reply, but I decided to apply to the job in question and cross the housing bridge if/when necessary.

Good to "see" you Fat Chris. Missed your humor around here.

House hunting is a b--ch for a few days but just throw yourself into it and get it done--make it your "full-time job" for a few days. Those few days will go by quickly and naturally, when it's all said and done, you will be relieved that it's over and you have a pad.

Cheers, man. Glad to hear that it is appreciated! I try to mix my cheesy jokes with a bit of insight as well--can't be irreverent all the time!

I took a six-month hiatus from the boards to concentrate on my work here in Beijing and I will probably take another hiatus once the semester begins in a couple of weeks. In the meantime it's good to be back on the dave's.

Good luck with living in the 'du. It really is a great city. Cherish it!

Warm regards,
fat_chris
