I have a BA in Elementary Ed and certification in ESOL. I also have a teaching certificate as well in Florida. I have 20 years experience teaching in Elementary. I'd like to find a job for a year or so in a larger city such as HCMC, DaNang, Hanoi, or other larger areas. I'd rather not be out in the countryside somewhere, I love the city life (especially a night life).
1. Do I need a TEFL or CELTA?
2. What is the per hour rate I can expect?
3. How many opportunities are there for a person like me? Many, few, some, little?
4. Is it more likely to get a job on the ground or can I get one being here in the states?
5. Is there a stigma of a male teacher teaching children of a young age in Vietnam? Sometimes in the US it's not easy. |

With your credentials, your best bet would be to check out one of the websites that advertises jobs in international schools such as https://www.iss.edu/ Such jobs are typically found by applying and interviewing from the States. Salary and benefits would likely be on par with what you'd get as a U.S. public school teacher. RT airfare and housing are often included.
The "TA" in CELTA stands for "teaching adults," so you certainly don't need one if you're hoping to teach kids.
If you're looking at local elementary schools--public or private--that would be a different ballgame. Hopefully, others will chime in with specifics regarding those opportunities.
Good luck, and please keep us posted on how things go! |
