I'm looking for recommendations for a man I'm teaching in Germany who wants to travel to the UK for a holiday to improve his English. He hopes to take an English course somewhere. He asked me what area of the UK would be good, as far as accents. I think he is hoping for a clear, standard English. He's just learning English right now.
Are there any areas that are particularly good? Any areas that he shouldn't go to? |

Not aimed at you, JN, but Germany is less than two hour's flying time from the UK. If this student was serious about doing a course in the UK, they would've already googled it.
Assuming they've never left Germany and/or don't use www, London would have the most choice followed by a south coast location such as Brighton.
I did CELTA in Newcastle. I like it there, but even I can't understand the locals so a student would be better off not trying. As a rough guide for your intrepid German, keep south of Birmingham. |

Sorry, I couldn't get back any earlier. I had no Internet access. In fact, I had no time to post this on the UK forum, but will do that.
I believe the student is serious about going to the UK and I think he had looked into it and thought about London, but he's never been there before and I suppose he was hoping for a "expert" English teacher's opinion, but since I am not from the UK, I thought I'd ask those who might have a better idea.
Thanks for the helpful info. I appreciate it. |
