I know a four-year degree is required by the government to teach in Japan; my question is, does the type of degree matter? Would I be eligible with a BGS (Bachelor of General Studies - it's a 4-year degree that has no declared major)?

It's not a teaching requirement, but a visa requirement. Any BA or BS will do.

Thanks for the reply.

Sorry for being dense, but when you say "any BA or BS will do", I'm still not sure whether that means a BGS will work or not, since it's not the same thing as far as I know. For example, at my school a BGS is not allowed to declare a major or minor.

If you have a four-year uni degree, you should be good to go as far as the visa is concerned. Getting a job with visa sponsorship is another thing entirely. Good luck to you!

I'm sure Maitoshi meant that any bachelor's/baccalaureate/undergraduate degree will do.

There's a BA for almost anything nowadays. Not too long ago, there wasn't even such a thing as a literature degree.
