Hi all,
I'm moving to Shanghai in 2 weeks to take up an IELTS examiner position. I have a few questions and any advice would be greatly appreciated.
1. Cost of living.. I'm alone, done with the drinking days and a bit of a home bod. On the 24000RMB they offer, can I save half of this, or more?
2. Where to live? As i'll be travelling a lot around China, central to a transport hub would make life easier. Can someone suggest an area to look and what I should expect to pay for 1 bedroom. Not into house share.
3. Learning the language. What is the best program available for learning the language? I only have to work 15 days a month, so should have time for a part time course. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance |

I've been able to make great gains in my Chinese using the HSK courses on Memrise.com - completely free, by the way. I also supplement with a hired tutor for intensive speaking/listening, though ChinesePod.com is also very helpful (not free). |

Thanks Direshark. I will go and have a look.
My apologies to all...I think I was supposed to post this in the "off-topic". I will re-post over there. |

| In terms of where to live, I'd recommend somewhere west (near the line 2 that goes to Hongqiao) as that will be the best place to get to assignments outside Shanghai or get to a Shanghai centre early in the morning. |

Assuming you get an apartment for around 4-5k (they're out there), you can easily save half of that while still living well.
Good luck with the move. It's a great city. |

| Beetlil: How's it going there for you so far? I ask because I might be coming over soon to do the same! |
