people should take these offers because I enjoy reading their horror stories of not getting paid, having their passports being held hostage, and other acts of indentured servitude |

You're saying that these people are incapable of walking to the American (or other) embassy and telling them your passport was held hostage and need protection and police involvement or getting a new passport to leave the country the horrifically held them as indentured servants? |

If they are working on anything but a Z visa, changed to a residents permit, the last thing they would want is police involvement, because they are working illegally, irrespective of what the school may say.
Protection from whom, and by whom? The police will not protect them.
A new passport to leave the country? If they get a new passport, they will have to go through the process of getting a visa before they can leave. No valid visa = no leave, and arrested.
Where do people get these crazy notions and ideas from? |

As I understand it, current regs do allow students to work certain employment for a limited number of hours but at the present, I am not aware of any schools who actually employ a student. |

I was aware of downward pressure on the airfare allowance/refund, but I agree 2000RMB is a new low.
10000 trending down to 8000 was the levels I was seeing until this.
US$2000 is too high, if the post is in error. |

2000 rmb might get someone to where he's going if he is IN COUNTRY. |

Be interesting to know how people in China on 'non-Z' visas become legal workers. |
