I have seen several ads for AP and A Level jobs and very low salaries.
If you are teaching these courses, specifically the sciences, dont accept anything under 15,000! |

The HR staff at my school give themselves a big pat on the back when they can get a certified teacher to come here for 10k/month and shared housing.... |

AP and A-Level jobs tend to be real (40 hour a week job) jobs. As such, I would find anything less than 20k after taxes personally insulting. |

I'm teaching AP History, plus a few ESL classes. Low hours, but there's a lot of prep time and background reading required for the History. I really enjoy the reading. Got a pretty nice apartment plus 22k before tax. I was earning much more in my last job, but this looked a bit easier, and liked the idea of teaching History. It's only a six month contract, with no holidays till right at the end, which is a bummer. I will teach in their summer programme. I don't mind the short contract. We can part ways if it doesn't work out. |

So I guess you believe that teachers should live a monk-like existence, taking vows of poverty and celibacy so they can experience the joy of bringing the English language to the unfortunate masses here in China?
For some of us, education is a career that can provide us with a financial future.
It's easy to see why those who have forsaken any aspirations of upward mobility find it deeply disturbing that we haven't. It's called cognitive dissonance. |

I love the "money" issue here - that's all you folks think about. You are clearly NOT teachers when you choose jobs based on remuneration only. You chose the wrong country.. If it is damn critical to you lives, head home and get a job there. WWwwoooooooooooooo, we know why you can't right? Just admit it. You pride your anonymity, so why not tell us you real reasons. |
The only reason to work is for money. |

Good original post and most of the follow-ups. Think it exemplifies how anything with value in China will be attempted to be commoditized as quickly as possible.
These prep courses have become big business quickly, and sure most principals, recruiters etc, are trying to swindle every RMB possible from the teacher where they can as the parents are willing to pay big bucks for the course and there is some good margin there. |
