I received the following offer from Saudi British Center (Riyadh) via recruitment agency TLTP: (I'm not taking it)

Salary: 10 000 SR
Acc allowance: 2500 SR
Transport allowance: 500 SR

Deceptive Tactics:

After listening to all the sales talk from the eager agent I asked a few questions which revealed the following:

The agent told me that there were two types of visas available and the one I got would depend on what is available...

The contract says that there are 30 days paid vacation after every 12 months work. However, The agent told me that the contract is for 10 months...This is not clear in the contract which says: for the academic year .....2015-2016.

Run away as fast as you can..

Honestly, the major contractors (EdEx/ICEAT/Hussan) will almost certainly offer anyone with a BA and CELTA at least 11,000 riyals. The Colleges of Excellence will pay more like 11,500-12,000 riyals.

I posted an advert where a CoE program was offering 55,000 USD a year for a BA plus CELTA and 3 years of experience.

I don't know what your quals and experience are but these are the sorts of numbers you should be looking for in my opinion!

I won't comment on this particular contract, but an academic year is generally 9-10 months. The addition of a summer term extends the school year.

It may also be a roundabout way of saying you will be paid the 30 days only pro rata.

Al hussan and Iceat are offering close to 13,000 currently. This is a pathetic offer above but there are plenty of weird rejects from the west who are happy with that.

You call them rejects but for somebody starting off they may see it as an opportunity, whether they can fulfil the contract or not due to conditions etc. is a different matter.

I agree, no doubt 10,000 + 2500+ 500 SAR may be on the low end, but if one can spend 2000 on rent and 1000 for food and 1000 for spending money, that's still , 9000 SAR saving a month which comes to $28,000 (USD) per year in savings, not bad for ESL teacher?

Yes, Saudi does attract many people from the West who are weird and rejects, but its not a bad place to work or even live.

Actually the non-Westerners here are less weird on average. Probably because its a lot harder to make it in their countries and incentive to leave and work elsewhere is much greater.

It is still true though most westerners are not making 3466 USD (13000 SAR) a month after taxes (41,500) and getting furnished housing with transportation and utilities from their employer.

I agree. That was one of the worst parts of living there, the Westerners.

Some strange characters around. Misers and profligates and old-style crazies. Alkies and perverts by the score.

I went shopping with an American (African) colleague of mine. He found out at the checkout the price of (30) eggs had increased from 16 sr to 18 sr. So he walked away and said he will find another cheaper place. Needless to say I didn't go shopping with him again.

I'm all up for saving etc but come on...

What was your point in mentioning his ethnicity? And what does this have to do with SBC? Confused

Anyway...

Discussions go off topic at times and as you can see we are now discussing weird westerners in this thread.

I was describing my colleague. My point stands. He is a miser and Saudi attracts a lot of rejects from the west.
