I've noticed a lot of ESL jobs are now asking for PhDs. Is this an example of reverse psychology? Laughing

I doubt it has anything to do with reverse psychology. Those particular employers probably want to widen their pool of applicants considering the majority of PhD holders tend to be from non-Anglophone countries.

Require teachers to have more credentials...while paying them less money....makes sense in the bizarro backward thinking world of KSA.

Now class, repeat after me: "After have...you must Verb 3."

The charade of teaching grammar as a second language in the middle east.

Classes that are considered normal here can only be considered as being remedial in Europe or USA. The fun part here is watching teachers buy in to the fact that they think they are really teaching, supporting the rest of us with various "teaching" approaches demonstrated thru workshops and PowerPoint and so forth. How many have I sat thru......a good laugh, all the same

Anybody who actually did a doctorate in E.S.L. or remotely connected "discipline" should never be allowed to set foot in a classroom, except maybe to teach research skills, referencing, and the like.

A language is a skills, not knowledge, and, as Scot rightly points out above, it is acquired, not taught. You don't learn to ride a bike or become a great plumber by reading books, and you certainly don't have it taught to you by someone whose sole qualification is having written 100,000 words on it.

A Ph.D. outside of the natural sciences and I.T. is a total, unfunny joke.

All to do with perceived status. 'Oh look we have a .lot of doctors teaching us so we must be important. ' Sadly a PhD is a research qualification and not a teaching qualification.

Agree with Maskkif. There is no science above math, logica and physics, if all these three are true, and even this, if they are true, cannot be proved, and we do not know. We don't even know what gravitation, mass or electricity is.
PhD in education, psychology, Elt or literature is a fake joke. ELT PhDs I have met in my long life have always been grand stodgy fakes, who always claim professional privileges they never merit and higher wages they never merit.

What a ridiculous ignorant statement. A PHD is a piece of research intended to advance the corpus of knowledge in the field it is undertaken. All fields of study are valid. To suggest otherwise is elitist and ultimately defeatist.

Then try to point out a single law, the way science makes them, of Elt or Education et alia. You will be the first one in the universe to point it. Now prove your point.

Or even better, don't waste your time MG [ mathematica et logica longa, vita brevis]...

So for you the only real test of knowledge are the so - called universal Laws. How narrow minded. For you a PhD that helps to explain the relationship between poverty and crime is not worthy even though it could help policy makers. You clearly don't belong in the world of education.

This is called ad personam. Here the field is enormous. Ad rem, I said, ad rem don't waste your time. It is better to be narrow-minded with Galileo or David Hume or Kant or Tertulian, than broad-minded with ELT profs and MG.
I close the case, as to continue is pointless [ vita brevis, ignorantia infinita].

Muscat Gary is right. A PhD thesis adds to the store of human knowledge. That is its purpose. It is not about creating/finding laws, it is about the advancement of humanity.

Sorry balqis, but you are well and truly off the mark and quite possibly off your trolley too.
