Hi,
does anyone know if Amazon.com will deliver to Saudi Arabia? I have access to a P.O. Box.
Thanks.

When I was working there I used Amazon often, both from US and Germany.

A couple of years ago they started taxing packages that were worth over US100. I paid tax on an order of books from Amazon, which together with the shipping made me give up importing them. Amazon de shipping was way cheaper than the gringo branch, UK was a bit better than US also but the books were more expensive. A workmate seems to receive books fairly regularly, so it's still doable.
When you are getting ready for final exit it is heartbreaking to abandon your years of book collecting, so in recent years I stuck almost exclusively to ebooks. Amazon won't sell me ebooks here for some reason, so I am forced into piracy for those. Although the pretentious may scoff, Jarir has loads of books, if you can't get what you specifically want you can find plenty of choice to amuse you.

Mike, why would you have to abandon them?

Shipping costs will deter many from sending back all their books on Final Exit.

I never paid tax on any books, CDs or DVDs that I received I found amazon.de better value than the others.. For the Anglo Monoglot they even have their site in English !

I found it much easier--if I didn't need anything urgently--to wait a while until my wishlist contained quite a few items, buy everything en bloc, and send it to a maildrop in America (I'm sure they have such services in Europe, too) or to my parents in Florida. They'd then forward me the merchandise via U.S.P.S. or, more conveniently for me in the Gulf, FedEx.

The overall cost worked out cheaper. The few retailers that do ship to the Near East charge exorbitant prices.

Amazon from Germany was very reasonable and there was a flat charge - for one item or one hundred.

The maildrop services mentioned are available in KSA but I have forgotten the name of the provider. That is handy for those who have no PO Box Number to use. I used my employer's PO Box which was available for postal deliveries for teachers.

The shipping is a problem for me, I couldn't find a shipping company that even knew where Guatemala is, let alone be trusted with my things. Luckily for me I've been sticking favorites in the kids' suitcases for the last two years each summer, so I won't leave completely empty-handed.

Apparently it goes with the discussion above of sending all those books one orders out of the country when one leaves...

Aha. The cost of shipping when the day comes for Final Exit ! The Guatemala angle reminded me of an incident in Jeddah many moons ago.

On geographical awareness in KSA and Middle East I remember a conversation I had.

Me "I want to go to Iceland"
Arab "Where ?"
Me "Iceland"
Arab "Where is this place ?"
Me " Between Europe and the USA"
Arab " We cannot know all countries"

The guy in question was a travel agent whose job involved buying and selling airline tickets ! (This was in the days when Icelandair/Loftleidir offered the cheapest transatlantic travel available.)

It was in reply to the message above from Amerrycan, my humble non-apologies for going off the original topic, a crime I have never witnessed anyone else here doing.
On future occasions I will make sure to use the quote function in order for those can't to make the connection.
Or maybe I won't. Wink
