China announces September holiday to commemorate victory in WWII


China's State Council yesterday announced that September 3 will be a national holiday this year to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, or more importantly, the allied victory over Japan.

Workers will get three days off from September 3 to September 5 (Thursday-Saturday). As it goes in China, Sunday, September 6 will be a work make-up day.

Hong Kongers are also expecting to enjoy the three-day holiday. According to SCMP:

Hong Kong's Labour Department followed suit by announcing yesterday that it would submit a bill to the Legislative Council later this month to make the day, a Thursday, a holiday so people could take part in commemorative activities.

"The move aims to allow people around the country to participate in activities to commemorate China's victory in the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the victory in the Anti-Fascist War," a statement by the State Council said yesterday.

President Xi Jinping plans to hold a military parade in September at the site Japan attacked in 1937, ultimately triggering the Second Sino-Japanese War. This would be the first time China has held a parade to commemorate the World War II victory, although Chinese soldiers did recently march in Moscow's Victory Day parade. The country also set a date last year to remember the Nanjing Massacre in 1937.

It is unknown whether this holiday will become a permanent one.
