Hi there, fairly new here but am very interested in teaching abroad. I am having a difficult time finding 6 month teaching programs/contracts, which I prefer because of the time I will be graduating at. So far I have found a few on API but of course I have to pay for the program application. I am curious to know if I can look elsewhere for similar contracts without having to go through a program and pay for it. |

We can answer better if you give us some idea of where in the world you would like to go.
The very general answer is that few employers want to go through all the hoops of hiring, getting a new teacher started, and etc. unless s/he will be around for at least an academic year. Six month contracts aren't common. |

I'm fond of any locations in Asia which seem to have more teaching positions that I can tell so far. I will actually have a degree in Education by the time I graduate which will be in the Fall so I'm looking at teaching abroad in January/February time frame. |

That's helpful. I also suggest that you post this in the General Asia forum below - there are many posters based in Asia who don't float around here in the General boards but will be glad to help out. |

You won't find a 6 month contract while you are sitting in your living room back home for a number of reasons:
employers want teachers who can work a full academic year.
It is not worth the trouble to obtain the proper visa and permits for a short time teacher.
It is too expensive to fly someone in for a short time - there are lots of bodies around to choose from for short term work.
With all of that said, IF you were on the ground at the right time of year you can usually find short term employment. The job won't come with airfare and probably won't have a proper visa but you can find work.
Thailand, Taiwan, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and China are places you would most likely be successful.
With a proper education degree and one would assume a teacher's license it would be in YOUR best interest to try to land a job at home for a year or two then consider the international school circuit. The pay is about 5 times better than working in EFL and they usually come with a nice expat benefits package as well. |
