I know Korea checks because I used to teach there. But I am thinking about going back to China. I got a Visa in Washington D.C. for $150 last time. When you enter China at customs will it say on their computers whether you have a felony? and if so will you be denied entry? Thanks.

I don't know, but I think most jobs in China nowadays require you to provide a criminal background check in order to get a Z visa...

The current trend is for national background checks which I would assume show your felony. They are denying people with misdemeanors so I would have to say a definite no. Beijing has rolled back its requirements to a more local check so you may be able to hide your felony by applying there, if your felony was in a different jurisdiction from your legal residence. There may be a couple other localities that are not requiring them at this point. I think that if you held on that you will see this drive to national background checks go away. Policy moves outwards from Beijing slowly. That fact that the jurisdiction of Beijing has rolled back this requirement should mean that the outwards jurisdictions that are now implementing the government's 2013-2014 new requirement will catch up eventually. Quite funny really.

The Chinese won't have any information about your criminal history unless you

A)Tell them about it, or

B)Are applying for work in a province / school currently requiring a CBC

Don't do (A), and don't apply for schools where (B) will be required. More and more places are requiring a CBC each year, and you might end up getting a decent gig this year only to find them require one in order to renew you *next* year.

A lot of places that require one, only do so if you are a new applicant or changing employers, if you are renewing, you do not need one.

Not yet. Korea had the same policy also at the start. Only *new* applicants need provide CBCs. Eventually even those who had been at the same job for years, since even before the rule was created had to cough up a criminal check or immigration wouldn't renew their visa.

Yep, not only that but they required FBI checks too which take months. I remember many American friends going crazy about that a few years ago!
