Seems that some universities in the private education sector are ripping off students from China by forcing them to pay exorbitant prices for dormitories. This of course is one way of offsetting the decline in student numbers but many would see it as highly unethical for Shih Hsin University to be charging $NT40,000 per semester for Chinese(international) students while local Taiwanese students pay between $NT12,000 and $NT24,000, less than half. This is obvious discrimination and it is good that the students have decided to protest. Typically the president of Shih Hsin blamed irresponsible journalists for "distorting the truth" but the real truth in this matter is that universities are resorting to desperate measure to survive in an era of low birth rates.
